Divi Setup

Setting up a Divi site from scratch includes a lot of distinct parts…

Checklist:

Pre-initialization:

  • ✓ Create subdomain directory (server).
  • ✓ Upload WordPress files to ftp directory.
  • ✓ Create hostname record (1&1).
  • ✓ Connect subdomain to directory.

Initialization:

  • Visit the new subdomain through a browser.
  • Select the language (English).
  • Enter DB data
    • db name
    • db username
    • db password
    • db host
    • leave table prefix alone
  • Add additional site data:
    • Name the site (you’ll add the tagline later).
    • Create the initial user (administrator by default).
    • Enter or accept the password.
    • Enter an email address.
    • (When creating a development site, disable [discourage] search engine crawling.)

Apply Divi theme:

Dashboard > Users > Add New > Upload Theme

Upload the Divi.zip file.
Activate the theme.

Make a home page:

Pages > Add New

User Administration:

Set up present (initial, admin) user:
Dashboard > Users > All Users

Add pages

  • gather information from partner
  • Important to invoke the divi builder each time.

Modify Divi Module Defaults

Divi > Module Customizer > …

  • Image > Animation > Fade In (left-to-right by default)
  • Some colors to change to get them aligned with your color scheme

    • Portfolio
    • Filterable Portfolio

x++. Spin up new site:
a. Setup new subdomain.
b. Setup folder in FTP.
c. Setup database on 1&1.
d. Update appropriate values in the wp-config.php file (e.g. db name, db username, db host, etc.).
e. Visit site root (e.g. “https://example.com/”), and add appropriate information.
f. After completing the initial setup, sign into the site (i.e. /wp-login.php).
x++. Add Divi theme (i.e. visit http://davideldridge.org/wp-admin/theme-install?upload), presuming that you have downloaded the theme (Divi.zip) from Elegant Themes, …
a. From the dashboard or wherever, go to Appearance › Themes.
b. On the Themes page, hit the “Add New” button.
c. On the Add Themes page, hit the “Upload Theme” button.
d. Upload the (Divi.zip) file through the upload form interface.
e. Once you have seen that the upload was successful, “Activate” the theme from the provided link (i.e. the “Activate” link).
x++. Add a new page (http://davideldridge.org/wp-admin/post-new?post_type=page):
a. Hover over the Pages link in navigation and select Add New, or hover over the “+ New” button in the Administrative bar at top, and select “Page”.
b. Choose to use the Divi Builder.
c. Name it appropriately (e.g. Home).
d. Publish it.
e. Repeat as many times as necessary in order to flesh out the navigation (subsequently).
note: You can populate the pages with content later.
x++. Add some information about the site/organization (http://davideldridge.org/wp-admin/options-general):
a. Go to Settings › (General).
b. (Tagline:) Add a “Tagline”.
c. (Membership:) Ensure that not anyone can register.
d. (New User Default Role:) Set the default user role (maybe “Editor” would be a good default, unless there will be more than one or two [content] contributors).
e. Set the timezone (select “Chicago” or “UTC-5”).
f. Set the week to start on Sunday.
g. Save your changes.

x++. Enable/disable and update social networking and RSS information in the Divi ePanel (http://davideldridge.org/wp-admin/admin.php?page=et_divi_options):
a. Enable/disable icons.
b. Add URLs where necessary.
c. Enable “back to top” button.
